Is the 2024 Volvo XC90 a good SUV?
The 2024 Volvo XC90 is a luxurious three-row SUV with impressive power, a refined interior, and a beautiful design. It’s a 7.5 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2024 Volvo XC90?
The XC90 sees mild tweaks for 2024. The base powertrain is now rated at 250 hp (up 3 hp from last year), and the previously available blacked-out exterior trim package has been dropped.
Up for a redesign for 2025, the current XC90 hardly manages to feel outdated. Its exterior pairs soft curves with a purposeful stance. It’s brawny without shouting about it. Inside, it’s even better, with a limited number of buttons and knobs plus beautiful materials throughout.
The base 250-hp B5 version is fine, but we’d step up to the 316-hp B6 powertrain for its extra grunt that comes in handy when hauling an entire family. The available Recharge plug-in hybrid powertrain is costly, though with 455 hp and a 33-mile all-electric range on a full charge, it may not be hard to justify.
No XC90 offers especially sporty moves. Instead, these big SUVs are all about comfort and serenity. They’re quiet and ride well, especially with the optional air suspension With the PilotAssist suite of driver-assistance tech engaged, they make for exceptionally relaxing, insulated long-distance cruisers, too.
That cabin is more than just pretty. It’s also quite spacious for six or seven passengers and their gear. Plush front seats, decent second-row room, and a third row capable of squeezing in a pair of smaller adults make it a proper family-hauler.
Volvo doesn’t charge extra for any of its driver-assistance tech, including adaptive cruise control with limited hands-off ability, active lane control, and blind-spot monitors. The XC90 has scored well in crash tests, too.
How much does the 2024 Volvo XC90 cost?
The XC90 lineup starts at $57,195, which buys the base B5 in Core trim. It’s hardly basic, though, as it includes a big sunroof, power-adjustable front seats that are heated, synthetic upholstery on all three rows, and a vertical touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
We’d budget closer to $63,000 for the B6 powertrain, or consider stepping up to the mid-level version with its bigger wheels and available second-row captain’s chairs.
Where is the 2024 Volvo XC90 made?
In Sweden.
