What’s new for the 2024 Volvo XC60?
A new Black Edition trim level tops the lineup with, you guessed it, blacked-out elements. The lineup also shifts to standard all-wheel drive, and drops the mid-level B6 powertrain.
Otherwise, the lineup sticks around with circa-2018 styling that still looks great. The wide front grille comes twinned with arrow-sharp LED headlights. Tall taillights at the rear tie the XC60 to Volvo’s 850 wagons of the 1990s, though the current one isn’t quite as cavernous inside. It is, however, quite relaxing, with soothing surfaces and delightful interior hues. The cabin opens up best with lighter shades, especially the available synthetic fabric blend.
A pair of engine options—called B5 and T8—deliver between 247 and a hearty 445 hp to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The B5 is fine for most drivers, though we miss last year’s mid-level B6 version with its 315-hp rating. The XC60 Recharge plug-in hybrid is expensive, but its 36 miles of tailpipe emissions-free range on a full charge makes it a commuting champ.
B5 XC60 models are estimated in the mid-20-mpg range.
No XC60 delivers sporting bonafides, but all strike a commendable balance between comfort and entertainment. The optional air suspension is worth its cost, too.
The XC60’s cabin is all-day comfortable due to exceptional front seats and a reasonably large second row. The cargo area can lug about 50 cubic feet of stuff, which trails more efficiently packaged rivals.
Safety-wise, the XC60 impresses with a widely standard Pilot Assist system that offers limited hands-free driving. Top crash-test results from the NHTSA and the IIHS add to its appeal.
