What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Volkswagen Arteon? What does it compare to?
The 2024 VW Arteon is a big five-door hatchback that looks more like a sedan at first glance. Shop it against the Kia Stinger, Acura TLX, and Audi A5.
Is the 2024 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
The Arteon is a practical SUV alternative for drivers willing to forgo a high seating position. It’s stylish outside, a bit bland inside, and refined without being all that entertaining to drive. We rate it at 6.5 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2024 Volkswagen Arteon?
The Arteon carries into 2024 with few tweaks, though last year’s front-wheel-drive base model has been dropped.
This big five-door—yes, it’s actually a hatchback—serves up svelte style. Its coupe-like shape masks a huge, SUV-esque cargo area. Sure, the busy front end seems at odds with an otherwise sleek body, but the Arteon is a certified double-take vehicle. Then again, part of the reason we crane our necks every time we see one is because it’s a truly rare spot. VW sells about as many Tiguans a day as it does Arteons a month.
Inside, the Arteon is all business, though it’s plenty spacious in row two.
The single powertrain option this year is a 300-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4, which streams power to all four corners via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Arteon’s standard adaptive dampers provide a supple ride, even accounting for the big 20-inch wheels that come standard on both trim levels. While not thrilling to drive, the Arteon is nonetheless polished. Think of it more like a Mercedes-Benz than a BMW when it comes to zippiness.
At 25 mpg combined, fuel economy is decent.
The cabin offers up plenty of space, with materials more in line with VW norms. Standard soft nappa leather is a plus, but the switches and knobs you’ll find here are shared with the rest of the VW lineup. So too is the 8.0-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster, which don’t impart a luxurious feel.
Safety wise, the Arteon is a good choice thanks to its Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and wide range of standard driver assistance tech.
How much does the 2024 Volkswagen Arteon cost?
VW wants $49,225 for the cheapest Arteon. That sounds like a lot for a mainstream brand, but this model comes with leather seats, a big sunroof, and all-wheel drive. The extra $3,000 for the Premium trim adds cooled and massaging front seats, upgraded audio, and a surround-view camera system, among extra bits. It’s probably money well spent.
Where is the 2024 Volkswagen Arteon made?
In Germany.
