2024 Toyota Prius Review: Prices, Specs, and Photos

What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Toyota Prius? What does it compare to?

The Prius five-door hatchback comes in hybrid and plug-in hybrid forms. Prius hybrids come in LE, XLE, and Limited editions, while the Prius Prime sets out with SE, XSE, and XSE Premium grades. The Prius has rivals within its own brand in the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid, and at other brands from the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid to affordable EVs such as the Nissan Leaf.

Is the 2024 Toyota Prius a good car?

The Prius has been at the vanguard of efficiency since it was new in 2001, but it’s been eclipsed by all-electric cars and other plug-in hybrids. That said, it’s never been this stylish or capable, which helps it post a TCC Rating of 7.0 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

What’s new for the 2024 Toyota Prius?

The most powerful and efficient Prius so far returns with few changes for the 2024 model year. The important things carry over: its top 57-mpg EPA combined rating, its 45-mile-max plug-in range, and its epic look.

Yes, the Prius looks epic. That sounds unfamiliar even after a model year on the road, but it’s true. The latest Prius has a racy stance, a wedgy shape, and a coupe-like roofline that’s detailed with LED lighting and enough curves to fill out the desk drawer of a draftsperson. It’s a study in aero-smooth style. Inside, it’s decluttered and centered around a dash-top touchscreen of either 8.0 or 12.3 inches, but still studded with useful climate-control and audio buttons. A small, recessed set of gauges sits near the windshield. Elsewhere it’s stripped down to its horizontal, bowed essence.

This fifth-generation Prius has made major performance gains, in both ride and handling and in acceleration. Power comes from a 2.0-liter inline-4 coupled to an electric motor and battery pack that combine for a net of 194 hp, some 73 hp more than the gen-four Prius, and good for a 0-60 mph time of 7.2 seconds (or 7.0 seconds with AWD).

The Prius Prime Prime plug-in hybrid sits an inch longer, gets an available solar roof, and most importantly, sports a 13.6-kwh battery that enables up to 45 miles of all-electric driving that can be fully recharged in about four hours. With output of 220 hp, it can zip to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. In both versions, the Prius’ newfound handling finesse comes from a new architecture that’s made a whole range of Toyotas more interesting to drive—Prius, Corolla, etc.—though steering feel still isn’t a forte.

With its low stance and roofline, the Prius’ spacious interior comes with quibbles. Taller people must bend and slip into seats beneath the roofline and, in front, around the laid-back windshield frame. The front seats need more support and road noise fills the cabin often, too.

How much does the 2024 Toyota Prius cost?

The $28,745 2024 Toyota Prius LE kicks things off, with a $1,400 upcharge for all-wheel drive. It’s stocked with all a frugal driver might need, but the $35,760 Prius Limited has the only option for a surround-view camera system. A Prius Prime XSE Premium costs $40,465.

Where is the 2024 Toyota Prius made?

In Japan.
