Porsche’s first electric car, the Taycan is a sedan or wagon that delivers typical Porsche performance, though it trails the class for range. Rivals include the BMW i5, Tesla Model S, and Mercedes-Benz EQE.
The Taycan offers a vast lineup of truly sporty EVs. Every Taycan handles well; speed is up to your budget. It’s pricey, but the Taycan earns a TCC Rating of 8.6 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
The 2023 model got some changes that increased efficiency and 2025 changes that include more power, more range, and more standard equipment have already been announced. That said, the 2024 model gets no notable changes.
Sized like the BMW 5-Series, the Taycan is low, wide, and sleekly styled. It has traditional Porsche cues but interprets them in a new way that works for the electric age. Up front, its rounded nose dips down like a 911’s, but it has squarish LED or LED matrix headlights that combine with vertical air intake to create a fang-like look. Sedans have a rounded roof, while the Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo models have a long-roof wagon body style that adds good but not great cargo space inside. The sedan has limited headroom in the rear seat.
Otherwise, the cabin has a clean and simple design, though with three screens, including one for the climate controls. It doesn’t look overly luxurious unless you dip into the options list for special trim bits and extended leather upholstery.
While the base versions come with rear-wheel drive and a 79.2-kwh battery, a 93.4-kwh battery is available on low-end models and standard otherwise, and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain configuration starts just one notch up the lineup. Output starts at 321 hp, with the ability to tap into 402 hp in a launch control function. That makes the slowest 0-60 mph time a quick 5.1 seconds. Power progresses to 522, 562, 590, 670, and 750 hp with the overboost of launch control, and the 0-60 mph time drops all the way to 2.6 seconds. That’s hypercar quick.
The Taycan has handling to match its immense power. It’s heavy for a Porsche, but it sticks to the road and has the agility of a lighter car. The ride is also forgiving, especially with the air suspension and adaptive dampers.
No Taycan has been subjected to crash tests by either U.S. agency. While automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and parking sensors come standard, Porsche charges extra for such features as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, a surround-view camera system, and automatic parking.
