This compact crossover is a little smaller and less flashy than the newer CX-50 that will likely become the CX-5’s eventual replacement. It’s stylish and distinctive, with a big grille and birds-eye front lighting. The cabin is sophisticated across the lineup and elevates to truly upscale in Signature trim, with premium leather and real wood adornments.
The base engine is an inline-4 rated for 187 hp, and Turbo models make 256 hp with 93 octane. A 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive come standard across the lineup. Fuel economy sees a minor improvement with the 187-hp engine this year, though still falls far short of rivals’ hybrid offerings. That said, no competitor offers a lineup that’s this enjoyable to drive regardless of configuration, and the CX-5 is the peppiest in the class with composed handling and well-weighted steering.
The cabin is comfortable enough, with sporty bolstered front seats, though the rear bench is flat and cargo space is middling. We found the infotainment system frustrating to use, though Android Auto and Apple CarPlay help somewhat.
