What kind of vehicle is the 2024 BMW 4-Series? What does it compare to?
BMW’s 4-Series is a counterpart to the 3-Series sedan, available in coupe, convertible, and fastback variations. Rivals include the Audi A4 and A5 as well as the Mercedes C-Class.
Is the 2024 BMW 4-Series a good car?
Yes, though exterior styling may be polarizing. The BMW 4-Series is powerful, polished, and fun to drive, for a TCC Rating of 6.6 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2024 BMW 4-Series?
The 4-Series goes largely unchanged for 2024, following last year’s tech updates.
The massive kidney grilles up front may spark a visceral reaction in the 4-Series convertible, coupe, and Gran Coupe four-door models, but as the lines flow to the sides and back, they get increasingly calm. The cabins are nearly identical to the 3-Series aside from minor differences to the shifter and console, though BMW’s options palette is full of bold upholstery combinations, if that’s your thing.
BMW offers a ton of configuration choices, starting out with the entry-level 430i and its 255-hp turbo-4, to the mid-range boosted inline-6 with 382 hp, finally topping out with the M4’s 503 hp. They’re quick to respond and accelerate across the lineup, and base trims are even reasonably efficient with almost 35 mpg highway. Aside from the stiffly-tuned M4 and M4 Competition versions, the 4-Series provides deft handling and a comfortable ride. The M440i strikes a great balance between price and performance.
If a back seat is a necessity, limit your search to Gran Coupe models, but even then, you won’t find a lot of trunk space. The open-pore wood and plush nappa leather options might make you forget about the cabin’s compromises.
The related 3-Series lineup fares well in crash testing, though the 4-Series hasn’t been evaluated. Basic safety and driver-assistance tech comes standard across the lineup, and options include a more robust camera system, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display.
The 4-Series lineup pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch touchscreen, and a button gear selector handles shifting duties.
How much does the 2024 BMW 4-Series cost?
Budget $50,895 for the base 430i Coupe, which includes a surprisingly reasonable $995 destination fee. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive adds $2,000. Gran Coupes will generally come in about $1,500 lower, while convertibles cost quite a bit more. We prefer the spirit of the M440i models in the mid-$60,000s. The lineup tops out at $94,295 for the M4 Competition xDrive Convertible.
Where is the 2024 BMW 4-Series made?
BMW builds the 4-Series in Germany.
