2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport Review: Prices, Specs, and Photos

What kind of SUV is the 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport? What does it compare to?

The 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport is a scaled-down version of the brand’s quintessential styling, adapted for a two- or three-row crossover. It’s affordable, comfortable, and practical as far as vehicles in this segment go, but it falls short of other Rovers in terms of ruggedness and capability. Competitors include the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and even the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport a good SUV?

In general, yes. It rates above average for family duty, but trails rivals in fuel economy ratings. Its TCC Rating comes in at 6.0 out of a possible 10 points. (Read more abouthow we rate cars.)

What’s new for the 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport?

This year, the Discovery Sport gets standard Amazon Alexa integration to join Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard adaptive cruise control also joins the features menu.

The Discovery Sport’s styling clearly shows its family ties to the larger Land Rover and Range Rover lineup, though it has a lean, distinctive crossover profile. It’s smoother and more aero-friendly than the otherwise-similar Evoque, with an almost friendly headlight and grille design. The relative plainness carries over inside, where plastic trim betrays this Rover’s lower price point, balanced out somewhat with metallic trim and high-resolution screens.

This Land Rover keeps a turbo beat with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, quick off the line and plenty of grunt for highway speeds thanks to 246 hp and the 9-speed automatic transmission. It’s a stiff ride on dry pavement and there’s enough traction for slippery weather, but the Discovery Sport lacks the low-range gearbox that enables rock crawling in its bigger siblings.

Pack four adults in the Discovery Sport and they’ll be comfortable for hours, but adding a fifth to the second row disrupts the whole equation. The available third row is a nonstarter — it’s tight in every measure and one of the most cramped we’ve tested.

Adaptive cruise control, low-speed automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera are included across the lineup, though the Discovery Sport hasn’t been evaluated for crash protection.

How much does the 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport cost?

The Discovery Sport S starts at $45,775 and includes a 10-inch touchscreen, leather upholstery, and a decent list of standard features. The R-Dynamic SE model comes with premium audio, blind-spot monitors, and exclusive exterior and interior styling for $51,175 — and can approach the $60k mark with options if you’re so inclined.

Where is the 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport made?

In the United Kingdom.
