BMW’s updating its S 1000 XR adventure sport for the 2024 model year. Last overhauled during the 2020 model year, the S 1000 XR is an upright sportbike that goes up against bikes like Ducati’s Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak and the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+.

The S 1000 XR continues to use BMW’s tried-and-true, 999cc inline-four engine as used in the S 1000 RR superbike. Sporting water-and-oil cooling, the inline-four wears a 16-valve cylinder head with BMW Motorrad’s ShiftCam.
ShiftCam modulates intake valve lift during acceleration. When the throttle is partially opened the standard camshaft phase facilitates added engine torque along with improved fuel efficiency. At higher rpm, the camshaft shifts into an alternative position allowing for extra lift and engine power output.
The Motorrad crew says engine output is up five points to 170 hp at the crank courtesy of more aggressive intake channels and fuel/ignition mapping. Claimed torque remains the same at 84 lb.-ft. at 9,250 rpm.
The ergonomics have also been tweaked with a reshaped and 0.4-inch-taller seat pushing seat height to 33.5 inches. As usual BMW Motorrad continues to offer three seat heights to better accommodate customers. The handlebar clamp is new and the rear body panels have been reshaped for a more sporty appearance.
In the electronics department the LED headbeams now benefit from cornering function as standard equipment. A proximity-based key fob, more powerful battery, and USB charging port are included as well.
Customers can also purchase BMW Motorrad’s light and strong carbon fiber wheels which substantially boost vehicle maneuverability and are a worthwhile upgrade. Base price increases $545 to $18,190 with a three-year warranty, including roadside assistance.
