Acura’s first electric vehicle, the 2024 ZDX measures nearly the same size as the Acura MDX but it sits five people in two rows of seats. Rivals range from the related Cadillac Lyriq to the Genesis GV60 and Lexus RX luxury electric crossovers.
We won’t know until we test it likely late this year but it looks promising. The premium crossover debuts a new infotainment system for Acura (no touchpad!), and offers performance- and range-minded powertrains built on GM’s Ultium propulsion system. Acura targets a 325-mile range. We’ll withhold a TCC Rating until we test it. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
Everything except for the ZDX name, which was last used a decade ago for a coupe-like gas crossover related to the Honda Crosstour.
Built alongside the Cadillac Lyriq and sharing the same platform and 102-kwh battery pack, the 2024 ZDX represents Acura’s first step with a battery electric vehicle. In size, it’s similar to the Acura MDX three-row SUV, measuring one inch shorter at 197.7 inches but with a wheelbase that’s eight inches longer, at 121.8 inches. That should translate to a roomy interior for up to five passengers.
Yet it’s narrower and shorter in height, with a long nose, raked windshield, and abrupt tail that looks as much like a tall wagon as the Cadillac Lyriq. The high shoulders of the hood dip down into flat headlights that hug the corners. A solid grille plate bedazzled with Acura’s frozen motion spray fills the middle. The lower grille appears to have intakes, and it leads down the body and rocker panels in a two-tone silver design framing up to 22-inch wheels flickering with yellow Brembo calipers up front on ZDX Type S models. Flat sides lend it sophistication, but at the rear roofline, the design changes.
A chrome-like strip arching over the windows ends midway through the rear quarter windows, and the integrated roof spoiler extends down the sides of the rear windshield, like a hood. It angles steeply into the lower tailgate, which is vertical.
The interior houses a new touchscreen interface surely to be easier to operate than the cumbersome touchpad in the console of other Acura vehicles. It sticks out of the dash, however, and appears less integrated into the digital ecosystem though it includes a climate panel below with dials and buttons.
2024 Acura ZDX powertrains and range
Every ZDX uses a 102-kwh battery pack and GM’s Ultium propulsion system. The Acura ZDX A-Spec has a single-motor on the rear axle as standard, though dual-motor all-wheel drive is optional. In either case it makes 340 hp, though Acura did not release torque specs yet. The A-Spec single motor has an estimated range of 325 miles; the dual-motor model checks in at 315 miles. It rides on a multi-link suspension, and rolls on 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Acura boasts a 50/50 weight distribution.
The performance-oriented ZDX Type S comes standard with dual-motor all-wheel drive and an output of 500 hp, though Acura did not disclose a 0-60 mph estimate. The estimated range drops only to 288 miles. Performance upgrades for the Type S include Brembo brakes with 6-piston calipers and 15.6-inch rotors up front, plus an adjustable air suspension, adaptive dampers, and 22-inch wheels.
Acura estimates the ZDX can recoup up to 81 miles of range in just 10 minutes while DC-fast charging at up to 190 kw.
How much does the 2024 Acura ZDX cost?
A full features list hasn’t been announced yet, but Acura targets a starting price in the “$60,000 range” for the single-motor model. The ZDX Type S will start in the “$70,000 range.”
Standard features appear to be an 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster with an 11.3-inch touchscreen that has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also standard on the ZDX are driver-assist tech such as automatic emergency braking front and rear, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, and a driver attention monitor.
The operating system will run on Google built-in, and options include an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio and a limited hands-free drive system called Hands Free Cruise similar to GM’s Super Cruise that enables hands-free driving on up to 400,000 miles of highways across the U.S. and Canada.
Where is the 2024 Acura ZDX made?
In GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee factory, where the Cadillac Lyriq is built.
